Iris Leong
Assistant Vice President and Legal Counsel
99 Ranch Market

by John W. Kim, Nossaman LLP

Iris Leong is the Assistant Vice President and Legal Counsel for 99 Ranch Market, the largest Asian supermarket chain in the United States, which owns more than 35 stores nationwide. She is perhaps one of the youngest Asian Pacific American (APA) general counsels in Southern California.

Born in Taiwan to a journalist father and a homemaker mother, Iris moved to Malaysia for a year to attend preschool while her mother gave birth to her little brother. She recounts the strict emphasis her preschool had on teaching trilingual languages to the children. "At age five, we had to learn English, Malay and Mandarin Chinese vocabularies every morning. Each child was expected to stand in front of the class to properly recite the day of the week, the date, and the weather for that day in all three languages. If I made a mistake in one language, my teacher would not let me go outside to play on the seesaw. I would practice the night before to be prepared for my turn in front of the class the next day. It was nerve-wracking!” That early trilingual experience led Iris to continue to develop her Mandarin Chinese language skills even after she immigrated to Southern California with her family at age nine. To this day, Iris’s fluency in Mandarin Chinese is what helped land her dream job as general counsel for 99 Ranch Market. As an immigrant APA, she emphasizes that bilingual skills are a very important asset in today’s job market. "It helps set you apart from other candidates and makes you more marketable,” she said. CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

2013 NELC Academy
April 25-26, 2013 - Houston, TX

APPLICATION DEADLINE: 2/15/13

The Coordinating Committee of the National Employment Law Council ("NELC") invites applications to attend the 2013 NELC Academy in Houston, Texas, on April 25-26, 2013.  NELC is a non-profit educational organization charged with enriching the minority bar representing management in the field of labor and employment law.

The NELC Academy is open to minority attorneys with less than four years experience practicing management-side labor and employment law.  The purpose of the NELC Academy is to provide advanced skills training, expose participants to NELC’s national network of experienced minority labor and employment attorneys, encourage mentoring relationships, promote NELC to attorneys who will soon be eligible for membership, and to create a pipeline for future NELC leaders.

All NELC Academy participants will have direct interaction with in-house labor and employment lawyers from major corporations and leading minority labor and employment defense lawyers from across the country.  Space in the 2013 NELC Academy will be strictly limited to a maximum of 25 participants.  Participants will be selected based on a short application, a client or partner reference, and an endorsement from a member of NELC’s Coordinating Committee.

Topics to be covered at the 2013 NELC Academy will include Ethics for Employment and Labor Lawyers, Effectively Navigating Discovery Disputes, Preparing Witnesses and Defending Their Depositions, and Positioning Yourself for Career Success.  Academy participation is underwritten by NELC and its sponsors; the cost to participants is $100.  Academy participants or their employers are responsible for travel and accommodations at discounted rates.

To apply for the NELC Academy submit the following items to NELC no later than February 15, 2013:

  • Personal statement by the Applicant on what she/he hopes to achieve by participating in the Academy (maximum 500 words).
  • Applicant’s bio or resume (PDF).
  • Partner or client recommendation of Applicant for the Academy (maximum 250 words).
  • The application must be endorsed by a member of the NELC Coordinating Committee.  The endorsement may be in the form of an email forwarding the application.  Applicants who do not have access to a member of the Coordinating Committee should contact Carolyn Lam at carolynlam@outlook.com or (205) 835-7588.

All application materials should be submitted by email to Richard Amador, Chair of the NELC Services Committee, at amador@sanchez-amador.com, no later than February 15, 2013.  Early applications are strongly encouraged.  If you do not receive an email confirmation that your application has been received within 48 hours of submission, contact Sylvana Gabrielle at 213.955.7202.

The NELC Academy will be held in conjunction with NELC’s annual comprehensive labor and employment law conference at the Four Seasons in Houston, Texas.  Academy participants need not be members of NELC.  Click here for information about the 2013 NELC Conference or information about joining NELC.
