Congrats to CMCP Member David Fermino, Appointed To The
CA State Bar's Judicial Nominees Evaluation (JNE) Commission

About JNE Commision:
The mission of the Commission on Judicial Nominees Evaluation (JNE) of the State Bar of California is to assist the governor in the judicial selection process and thereby promote a California judiciary of quality and integrity by providing independent, comprehensive, accurate and fair evaluations of candidates for judicial appointment and nomination.

Sideman & Bancroft LLP Partner David Fermino has been appointed to the Commission on Judicial Nominees Evaluation ("JNE Commission”), the State Bar of California agency that evaluates candidates who are under consideration for a judicial appointment by the governor. Mr. Fermino will begin his term on the commission on February 1, 2015.

"The JNE plays a vital role in ensuring a thorough, fair, and timely process for appointing our state’s judges,” said Mr. Fermino. "I am honored to have been appointed, and look forward to helping the commission continue promoting a California judiciary of quality and integrity.”

The JNE Commission is composed of attorneys and public members who represent a broad cross-section of California’s diverse legal profession and general population. Appointed by the State Bar’s Board of Governors, the all-volunteer commission cannot nominate or appoint judges; it does, however, thoroughly investigate candidates for judicial appointment while maintaining a code of strict confidentiality.

Mr. Fermino focuses his practice on white collar criminal defense and complex criminal and civil appeals matters in state and federal courts. His extensive trial experience dates back to his role as a Supervising Deputy Federal Public Defender in Los Angeles and, subsequently, an Assistant Federal Public Defender in San Francisco. His appellate experience includes oral argument before the United States Supreme Court, an en banc panel of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and numerous three‐judge panels of the Ninth Circuit and the California Courts of Appeal. Mr. Fermino has also handled death penalty cases at the trial level, direct appeal and habeas corpus stages.
