The US Patent & Trademark Office does not permit registration of trademarks that disparage persons, institutions, beliefs or national symbols.  This session will explain the standards under US trademark law to bar registration of disparaging marks, review notable cases, and explore the social debate between the freedom of trademark owners to use marks of their own choosing vis-à-vis protecting the rights of ethnic and religious groups.
