Youth Law Academy Seeks Mentors for 2014!

The Youth Law Academy cordially invites you to participate in the upcoming 2014 Mentorship Program launching in January. Attorneys and Judges interested in fostering Centro Legal de la Raza’s diversity pipeline initiative of future attorneys and judges of color in California are encouraged to mentor an Oakland youth. Currently, the Youth Law Academy hosts youth between grade levels 10th through 12th to learn about the law and careers in the legal profession. The deadline to submit an application to become a Youth Law Academy Mentor is Friday, December 6, 2013.

What is the Youth Law Academy?

The Youth Law Academy serves the youth population in the East Bay and has a proactive approach to encourage underprivileged youth gain a better understanding of the U.S. legal system, college entrance requirements, careers in Law, and civic responsibility. The Youth Law Academy is designed to motivate students and enhance the academic skills necessary for success throughout high school and beyond. There is no cost to participate in the Youth Law Academy. Please review the brochure attached to this email for more information.

What is a mentor?

Mentors are people who have experience, have gained wisdom and knowledge from their experiences, and can offer insight, guidance, and inspiration to another person. Mentors can provide guidance and also learn from the mentees with whom they are partnered. The one-to-one partnership can provide many insights into developing professional relationship building.

What is my time commitment to mentoring?

Commit to monthly contact (email, telephone, in person, etc.) including 3 in-person meetings with mentee for the year. One of the in-person meetings may be at the annual Youth Law Academy Swear-In Ceremony held in August and/or at the annual Gala reception in April. If possible, schedule a shadow day at your office.

What if I don’t have any experience in mentori ng?

The Youth Law Academy has had a successful mentoring program for several years and continues to strive in helping mentors with orientation and guidelines. The Program Director will be the liaison communicating with you regarding any concerns you may have.

Will there be mentor training for me?

T he Youth Law Academy will have two mentor training sessions via webinars in early January. Mentors must attend one of the two mentor training sessions. The online application will ask for your preferred dates and times for training session.
